Helena is currently a lecturer in Music Technology in the Department of Electronic Engineering. She obtained a Masters degree in singing performance from the University of York before training as a postgraduate at Trinity College of Music and completed her PhD in Music Technology in the Dept of Music and Dept of Electronics at the University of York in 2008. Her research focuses on voice science and acoustics, considering the production and perception of the spoken and sung voice in different conditions, including the interactions between multiple performers and different environments).

Projects within the scope of the DC Labs include work with York Theatre Royal creating VR experiences of the theatre for a Virtual Box office and measuring the acoustics of the space before and after alterations. The WISHED project (Wellbeing: Investigating Singing Health in Ensembles through Digital Technologies) utilizes VR technology to investigate techniques and benefits of group singing.
