Game Production Studies: Lessons from Poland and Estonia

From 11:00 - 12:00hrs on Friday 19 June, join Anna Ozimek for a seminar about 'Game Production Studies: Lessons from Poland and Estonia'.

A Research Associate in the Department of Theatre, Film, Television and Interactive Media at the University of York, Anna will talk about the development of game production studies and the importance of understanding videogame production within the broader ecosystem of screen industries.

Anna's presentation draws on empirical data from two research projects about Polish videogame workers (2014–2018) and the Estonian videogame industry (2019–2020), which explored game-making practices outside the ‘core’ production regions of North America and the Asia-Pacific.

While videogames that have been developed, localised and tested in Poland and Estonia are played by people all over the world, the working lives of the people who contribute to their development are underexplored.

The above research projects investigated game workers' interpretations and negotiations of the risk associated with work in the videogame industry.

The investigation of Polish and Estonian videogame industries is not only a matter of discussing working practices and the unstable nature of employment in videogame production but also the changes in approaches to work and cultural production in the context of post-socialist countries.


Anna Ozimek is a research associate (in the Department of Theatre, Film, Television and Interactive Media at University of York. Previously, Anna worked a postdoctoral research fellow at Tallinn University. Anna received her PhD in 2018 from the School of Media and Communication in the University of Leeds. Her thesis "Videogame Work in Poland: Investigating Creative Labour in a Post-socialist Cultural industry" explored the construction and negotiation of entrepreneurial subjectivities among Polish videogame workers. Her research interests include: creative labour, cultural policy, the political economy of cultural industries, digital cultures and videogame industries in the Central and Eastern European region
