VikingVR wins York Culture Award

We are delighted to announce that VikingVR has won an award for Excellence in Media Arts.

Representatives from the DC Labs VikingVR team attended the annual York Culture Awards, hosted by Make it York.

VikingVR is a project made up of DC Labs researchers from Theatre, Film and Television, Electronic Engineering, and Archaeology, as well as additional support from History. The team worked closely with Martin Fell, Digital Team Leader at York Museums Trust to create a bespoke virtual reality experience for visitors to the Viking: Rediscover the Legend exhibition at Yorkshire Museum.

The VikingVR experience retold the story of Torksey Viking Great Army Winter Camp, and was based on the research project led by Prof Julian Richards, University of York and Prof Dawn Hadley, University of Sheffield. VikingVR is a proof of concept research project within a larger body of research: the Digital Narratives for Cultural Heritage (DiNar) project. 

This award is particularly meaningful for the VikingVR project, as it represents a first step in an exciting partnership with York Museums Trust. DiNar will be working together with the Trust on projects pushing the boundaries of digital interpretation. Early in 2018, the team will begin work with York Museums Trust to develop a new set of prototypes for the use of digital technologies to support the strategic aims of museums. 

The project was supported by an EPSRC Impact Accelerator Account grant and the work would not have been possible without the support of DC Labs.
