Dr Darren Reed

Darren Reed teaches in the University of York’s Sociology department, where he specialises in social informatics and human-computer interaction as a member of the University’s Science and Technologies Studies Unit (SATSU). Darren applies his socio-technical expertise to a number of community projects, including working with Tang Hall Big Local.

Darren guides DC Labs in uncovering the social and cultural influences of technology, which will investigate the social impact of the project’s Sim York and EPISODE game, working closely with the City of York Council. He also has a strong interest in the online interactions between viewers of competitive gaming, and the potential for novels forms of visualization to engage and educate live broadcast viewers about data literacy.

Elsewhere in the University Darren is involved in the Capacitie Marie Curie Initial Training Network, understanding the impact of technology on our approach to environmental monitoring and the related York City Environmental Observatory project.
