Joe Cutting’s research looks at game design, and how different game designs create different experiences for players.  His recent publications (below) look at how games focus players’ attention and how this focus changes their game experience. Other ongoing projects include:

  • Considering how games’ ability to direct our attention can be used to design games for learning
  • Investigating how to use Artificial Intelligence to create more engaging game opponents,
  • Looking at how games create a feeling of curiosity
  • Looking at whether players feel that the way they pay for games is fair
  • Looking at whether playing video games increases your memory and concentration

Before starting his PhD Joe spent many years creating digital exhibits for museums, including working for the Science Museum in London and running his own digital agency.
